A company called Saare Wind Energy OÜ plans to build a wind farm with a hundred wind turbines in Estonia's territorial waters in the sea off the West coast of the Saaaremaa island, Saarte Hääl reports.a

The building rights application submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications shows that sea wind park is planned to be located 10-27 km off the Western coast of Saaremaa.

Wind turbines would be positioned approximately 800-1,100 meters apart, so the sea area covered by the 100 wind turbines is around 100 km2.

The cost of the proposed offshore wind farm is in the range of 1.7 billion euros. This is a big investment object and thus capital will be included during development that takes place in several stages.

Given the time needed for official procedures, the construction period and the initialization phase, the wind power plant becomes operational and is connected to the network in 2022.

Saare Wind Energy OÜ currently produces electric power from solar panels in Jüri, Harjumaa, and sells it to another company.

An even bigger than the new planned sea wind energy park is in works by big scale businessman Endel Siff's company Baltic Blue Energy OÜ and that should be located between Saaremaa and Hiiumaa islands. The total capacity of Siff's wind farm would be 2,000 megawatts and it would have around 300 wind generators.
